Newcastle United v Crystal Palace: Warnock kicks off second Palace stint

Neil Warnock is relishing the chance to start his second stint as Crystal Palace manager at Newcastle United on Saturday.

The sides meet at St James Park just three days after Warnock was confirmed as the man to succeed Tony Pulis.

Pulis left Palace on the eve of the new Premier League season amid a reported disagreement over transfer policy, before the club s hunt for a new manager encountered numerous stumbling blocks and controversies.

But Warnock was eventually settled upon to take Palace forward, having guided the club to the Championship play-offs in 2008 before leaving for QPR in 2010 as administration gripped Selhurst Park.

And the 65-year-old believes that Palace s team spirit will prove to be a key factor in their battle for top-flight survival …

Ronaldo can beat Messi to next two Ballons d´Or – even if he loses the Clasico

Gerard Pique was absolutely right when he said that this Clasico means more to Barcelona, given the six-point deficit they must make up to Real Madrid at the top of the table.

In the personal head-to-head between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, a defeat for the former would not mean a great deal, either.

That s because, with two weeks to go until the winner is crowned, Ronaldo’s name is already on the Ballon d Or trophy. Even worse for Messi aficionados – and for those who wrote off Ronaldo as a spent force just weeks ago the 2017 prize is within his grasp, too.

Speaking after his hat-trick dispatched Atletico Madrid and made him the leading goalscorer in the history of the Madrid derby, Ronaldo was in bullish mood over his chances of winning football s t…

Borussia bid farewell to Arango

Borussia Monchengladbach s sporting director Max Eberl has paid tribute to former winger Juan Arango following his return to Mexico.

The 34-year-old confirmed his long-expected departure from Borussia this week and the Venezuelan will now ply his trade with Liga MX outfit Club Tijuana.

Arango s first club abroad was Monterrey and the Venezuela international will link up with Tijuana s general manager Ignacio Palou, whom he worked under at Puebla.

Cesar Faris, Arango s former national team manager, will be another familiar face for the attacking midfielder as he coaches at the Estadio Caliente.

Eberl said it had been a pleasure to have Arango at the club since arriving from Real Mallorca in 2009.

We re very proud and happy that Juan spent five years here w…

I´m happy here – Cavani in no rush to leave PSG

Edinson Cavani is in no rush to leave Paris Saint-Germain and expects to stay for the foreseeable future.

The Uruguayan has enjoyed a brilliant career in France having left Napoli in 2013, becoming the club s all-time leading scorer both in Ligue 1 and all competitions in the process.

Individually, last season was the best of Cavani s career, as he scored 35 times in 36 Ligue 1 games, but PSG were unable to win the title ahead of Monaco.

He could yet get close to that figure this term, as he has 27 with three games to go, and this year his goals have indeed guided PSG to top spot.

While team-mate Neymar continues to be linked with moves away despite only being in Paris for a season, Cavani is eager to stay at the club and continue winning titles.

Klopp: UEFA must act on rule breaches

Jurgen Klopp believes UEFA must take action against Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain if they have broken the rules on Financial Fair Play.

German magazine Der Spiegel made a number of claims against City in a series of articles, which are based on documents purportedly attained from whistleblowers Football Leaks.

The reporting claims Sheikh Mansour s City regime have topped up multi-million-pound sponsorship deals with Abu Dhabi companies, using their owner s fortune, in order to meet UEFA s Financial Fair Play (FFP) stipulations.

Last Friday, when the Football Leaks stories emerged with allegations that City were cut a favourable FFP settlement when they were punished for overspending by UEFA in 2014, the club declined to comment on out of context materi…

Bournemouth 1 Swansea City 0: Swans´ Premier League status in real danger

Swansea City s Premier League status is in real danger after they lost 1-0 at Bournemouth, giving Southampton the opportunity to send them into the bottom three.

Carlos Carvalhal s men seemed to have done enough to secure another season in the top-flight in early March, but Saturday s defeat which was sealed by Ryan Fraser extended their winless run to seven league matches and leaves them just a point above the relegation zone, with Saints playing at Everton later in the day.

Regardless of the result at Goodison Park, the Swans must now prepare for a huge clash with Southampton at the Liberty Stadium on Tuesday.

Swansea looked nervous right from the start and were lucky to remain level until the 37th minute, when Fraser s 20-yard effort took a wicked deflection …

Copa Libertadores Review: Veron makes Estudiantes comeback as Gremio stay perfect

Juan Sebastian Veron made a sensational return to professional football as Estudiantes lost to Barcelona in the Copa Libertadores, while Gremio preserved their 100 per cent record.

Club president and 42-year-old midfielder Veron started in 10-man Estudiantes 2-0 loss to Group 1 leaders Barcelona on Tuesday.

Veron was due to make his return on matchday one against Botafogo last month having made himself available after fans reached his target of box sales in Estudiantes new stadium.

The comeback was delayed because of a ban dating back to 2011, however Veron finally took to the field at Estadio Ciudad de La Plata but the former Argentina, Chelsea and Manchester United star was unable to prevent defeat against the Ecuadorian champions.

Dijon 0 Paris Saint-Germain 4: N 00001261 o Champions League hangover as Di Maria dazzles

Paris Saint-Germain began the process of putting another Champions League collapse behind them as they eased to a 4-0 Ligue 1 win at relegation-threatened Dijon.

Thomas Tuchel s men have again been left to lick their wounds following a European disappointment after surrendering a 2-0 first-leg lead against Manchester United in the last 16, losing 3-1 at Parc des Princes last week.

The inquest into their latest meltdown in Europe s biggest club competition will go on, but PSG did at least continue their procession to another Ligue 1 title in style at Stade Gaston-Gerard on Tuesday.

Kylian Mbappe, who said he has had trouble sleeping in the aftermath of the United defeat, had a goal sandwiched by fine finishes from Marquinhos and Angel Di Maria the latter a wonderf…

Former DFB president ´deeply saddened´ by Ozil situation

Mesut Ozil s decision to retire from international football as a result of feeling persecuted by the German Football Federation (DFB) has left their former president Theo Zwanziger deeply saddened .

Arsenal midfielder Ozil released a three-part statement on Sunday, addressing the criticism he has come under in recent months following his meeting with Turkey s controversial president Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

While the German media, sponsors and even some fans were targeted by Ozil – who has Turkish roots – in his letter, current DFB president Reinhard Grindel bore the brunt of the midfielder s fury.

Grindel was accused of incompetence, belittling Ozil s Turkish heritage and scapegoating the playmaker for Germany s World Cup group stage exit, while the 29-year-ol…
